Lab results have confirmed a second case of E. coli in Lee County, but a source for either case has yet to be identified.

"It takes time with testing and processing the investigation," said Julie Schilling, administrator for the Lee County Health Department. For each case, the department must discuss potential sources of the bacteria with the individual and conduct multiple lab tests, among other things, she said.

No business or facility has been asked to close by the Lee County Health Department or the Iowa Department of Public Health, Shilling said.

Across the river from Lee County, a third case of E. coli has been reported in Hancock County, Ill. As of Thursday, the case was not confirmed by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Messages left at the Hancock County Health Department Friday were not returned.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, E. coli 0157:H7 is a type of bacteria that can cause bloody diarrhea. Other symptoms include stomach cramps and chills, and there is usually no fever.
