Recalls: Sprouts, Pea mix

US Recall News     updated  2009/04/19 08:51

The following recalls have been announced:

Amalgamated Produce, Inc. is recalling a product labeled as either Specialty Farms Organic Crunchy Sprouts or Organic Crunchy Pea Mix, as noted below. These items all have a sell-by date from 3/31/09 through 4/27/09 and are net weight 4 ounces in plastic containers:

Specialty Farms, Organic Crunchy Sprouts, 8192400061; Specialty Farms, Organic Crunchy Pea Mix, 8192400061.

These sprouts are being recalled because they may have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. That is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Amalgamated Produce, Inc. voluntarily recalled sprouts April 9, 2009 after laboratory analysis found positive results.

Products have been distributed in the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Consumers who have purchased this product may contact API with questions at (800)358-3808 between the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. EDT.
