The subway train that plowed into another stopped train, killing at least seven people and injuring scores of others in the nation's capital, was part of an aging fleet that federal officials had sought to phase out because of safety concerns, an investigator said Tuesday.

Governor Martin O'Malley released a statement following the tragic crash of two Metro trains:

"The thoughts and prayers of all Marylanders are with those affected by the tragic crash of two Metro trains in Washington, DC, yesterday, including the family and friends of those who died.  I want to commend the first responders, who continue with recovery efforts today.  State and local resources were deployed to the scene last night, and continue to assist with the recovery.

"The bravery of the first responders and the actions of regular citizens who helped their fellow passengers escape the wreckage undoubtedly saved lives yesterday."
